Sea-captain Stephen Elliott finds more than he suspected when he’s drawn into Zoe Clifford’s search for the truth behind faded photographs and a WW1 diary.
Why did Liam Elliott serve with the Australian forces – and who was Georgina Duncannon? As the secrets of two generations of star-crossed lovers come to light, time slips into the past, taking us from York to Australia, Gallipoli and the Somme, and revealing the seductive power of a piercing, impossible affair.
Joining a ship bound for the war-torn Middle East, Stephen is faced with some disturbing parallels between then and now, just as Zoe, alone in London, is discovering the agony of distance, love and loss.
Liam’s haunting presence touches them both, but it takes a near-tragedy to make the message clear only in the present can the past be healed…
Inspired by a real WW1 diary, and revisiting characters introduced in her bestselling novel, ‘Louisa Elliott’, here, Ann Victoria Roberts uncovers Louisa’s legacy to later generations.
‘A thoroughly satisfying historical novel that bridges the decades with grace and skill…’ Kirkus Reviews
‘A splendid piece of storytelling about the loss of innocence and a love which endures…’ Publishing News

An epic historical romance, this is a great sequel to Louisa Elliott. This time-shifting novel continues the remarkable story of the Elliott family as two descendants try to piece together the family history through recently discovered letters and a diary. Secrets are revealed and the horrors of World War I ensue. Though a little long, the novel is beautifully written and draws the reader into the past and into this moving tale. Not to be missed for fans of historical fiction and romance.Product details

Liam Story edition by Ann Victoria Roberts Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
There is no way I can easily describe the powerful effect that this tremendous work of fiction blended skillfully with fact had on me. The writing is skilled and carries the reader forward in the quest to know more and the story line is heartbreakingly beautiful and moving, with three separate love stories weaving in and out of the book and entwining with each other. Don't be mistaken, however, in thinking that this is a lightweight romance story. The love is part of the whole panoply of a meticulously researched story of WWI, the shipping of oil during the Gulf Wars and life in England, Ireland, Australia and also Egypt.
The characters and their emotions are so real that I had to keep pausing to come to terms with their pain and confusion and when one prominent character died, I genuinely was unable to carry on reading for three days and entered a state almost of mourning.
This is a book that can be read on so many levels and by lovers of so many genres with equal enjoyment and will always pass the test of time and come out as fresh today as when it was written.
It is an absolutely wonderful book. If I could give it ten stars I would.
To date, this is one of the best WWI (Great War) novels I've read. Far from being a straightforward romance or that of tragic war story of heroism in the trenches of the Somme, it's a historical novel set within a contemporary romance novel. It's thought-provoking, and I admire the way in which the author dares to tackle the reality of risqué subject matter.
The story opens with unsuspecting Zoe Clifford (heroine), a young woman of her time (mid 1980s) as she sets out on a quest to uncover facts about the past, the Elliott side of her family. After all, which of two WWI soldier brothers depicted in a family photograph is Liam Elliott, and why is one wearing an Australian uniform? What she doesn't expect, when she ventures to York in search of answers to vital questions, is a brief encounter with a strange psychic experience. How can sense of deja vu seem so real, so relevant to her research?
Equally, the man who holds the key to the past and to her future, Stephen Elliott (hero) has no idea that innocent research will unearth a scandalous affair and that of a taboo relationship. As the medium of letters and Liam's diary draw Zoe and Stephen into another era, love blossoms between them as it had between others in the past. But, Stephen's role as a master mariner (Captain) soon has him sailing into a war zone. With the Gulf War threatening the safety of International shipping in the Straits of Hormuz, a major incident occurs in which Stephen wonders whether family history is about to come full circle. Can he survive and can he and Zoe break the mould and find absolute happiness denied of others that went before? This is a lovely, lovely story.
I couldn't wait until I could continue reading Liam's Story through out the day and night. It was a bit long but well worth reading.
After Louisa Elliott, this is a must read. It was a one-sitter, late night (let's say early morning) read for me and then I couldn't sleep when I finally got to bed at 4am. Even now after several weeks, I still go over parts of this book in my head. The good part is the modern day descendants of the earlier families and how they worked to piece together the lives of their ancestors from old letters and some feedback from other relatives.
So happy to see this in . My paperbacks have yellowed with age. One of my all time favorite books. The depth of emotion conveyed for the people in the story is revealing on so many levels.
